President Obama!

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

Its now official and Barack Obama is now the 44th president of the USA and the 1st African American president. Millions of people lined the streets of Washington DC watching the inauguration – just for a chance for them to say they were there.

I watched the first 10 minutes or so of him being sworn in. It didnt go 100% smoothly with Barack stumbling over the first few words. After the first few words the rest went to plan.

Looking at some of the sights in Washington DC, the rest of America and round the world it just showed what this all means to many people.

Obama has lots of things in his in-tray to sort out. Good luck Barack!!

Torres: City is not the team for Kaka

Saturday, January 17th, 2009

TorresIn an interview with the Daily Mail, Torres talked about Kaka and also United (in the title chase). In the interview he basically said that City are not really a “big” club and are not fighting for trophies in the league, nevermind Europe. He said infact they are struggling around the relegation zone. Out of all the Liverpool players hes properly the only one I dont mind. Heres is most of his interview where he talks about Kaka and the possibility of him joining City:

“Manchester City must first play UEFA Cup or Champions League football because I cannot see how any big player would want to play for them until then. Big players want to win trophies and Manchester City is not even in the race for trophies in England, let alone Europe. They are fighting to stay in the Premier League, or to get to the middle of the table.

“They have to build from there and then go against the biggest clubs and after that, maybe, a top player will join them. Chelsea were high in the League before they started to sign really big stars. Now everyone wants to play for Chelsea, but they did not when Roman Abramovich first arrived. They built a strong club and then it happened.”

Although Torres doesn’t subscribe to the somewhat ignorant and frankly absurd view that City are a club with ‘no history’, he cannot see what the Brazilian would gain from such a move at this moment in time.

“For now, I cannot imagine Kaka playing for Manchester City. It would be a fantastic contract, yes, but there are other things more important than money. A player wants to be remembered for what he has won, for the medals, for what he has given his club,” he continued, before highlighting what is clearly an important idea for Torres: that football is about glory, not about money.

“Imagine 10 years after you stop playing, you go back, you look around, you are not in any picture, you have no medals, no trophies; it is like you played for nothing,” he went on.

“You may have a fantastic car, a fantastic home, but what does it matter?”

And Torres confirmed that what he is seeking is the biggest club prize of them all: the European Champions League.

“The biggest ambition in my career is still to win the European Cup,” he said.

“I want to have a picture of that to look at later; I want to have that medal. You can have a contract that is better than your friends, but no player looks back and says: ‘I won more money’.”

Postman loses £130,000 to Nigerian scam

Friday, January 16th, 2009

Oh dear!! :( Stories like this seem to come up after few months when someone is REALLY gullible and ends up sending £1000s to someone apparently in Nigeria. The scam usually goes along the lines of asking for money to pay for funeral fees or legal fees. When these legal fees are paid then they can get the massive inheritance.

The latest is a postman who ended up losing £130,000!! (Not sure how he managed to get £130,000 ???). He became “friends” with someone called “Angela Gates” on the MySpace web site back in 2007. She first asks for money to pay for funeral fees and medical expenses. She then asks for money for legal fees which could free up land she had inherited which was worth $2m.

By the end of last year he had handed over his bank details and £100,000!! He said that he became suspicious when the woman stopped communicating with him and contacted what he thought was a website run by the FBI in America but which turned out to be another scam. (He really is very gullible/unlucky!!)

It turned out that the “woman” was actually a guy from America.

His problems didnt end though. A woman from America claimed she had also been caught in the scam. He helped her pay legal expenses and hired 2 ex-FBI agents to try and get the money back for both of them. It now seems that these people were also involved in the scam. He paid them £30,000 so that totals his losses to more than £130,000.

In a way I feel sorry for him but how can someone be that stupid! The message to people – DON’T send money to people you dont know!!

Plane crashes into Hudson river – Hero pilot

Friday, January 16th, 2009

Yesterday a plane crashed into the Hudson river in New York. Shortly after take-off it appears that a flock of birds hit the plane and took out both engines.

All the 155 passengers and crew on the plane survived thanks largely to the skills of the pilot. 78 people were treated for minor injuries, the most serious injury was someone who broke both legs. Considering what happened though it could have been a lot worse. Landing into water may seem a “better” option than crash landing into solid ground, but if the wings dip just abit then it would have been a lot different.

The pilot is a former Air Force fighter pilot with over 19,000 flying hours. Both the pilot and the crew had to react really quickly as it all happened moments after take off.

There are many photos online showing the plane in the water including one from a users of Twitter.
