The F1 World Championship will now be decided by the number of wins rather than points. Back in November 2008, Ecclestone proposed the plan to settle the F1 title by number of wins. The current points system will still operate if there is a tie between 2 places with the same number of wins.
It seems odd that they are changing things again since the last 2 championships have been extremely exciting – 2007 and 2008. On Tuesday, Ecclestone got his way when the FIA decided to change how championships would be won from this season.
If this way of winning championships was applied to all other championships in F1 it would have been quite different. Britain’s first World Champion for example would have been Stirling Moss. Moss won no championship but is widely regarded as one of the best drivers ever in F1 history. Andrew Benson from BBC Sport, blogs about how F1 history would have been different.
I am not sure this would work. Just imagine a championship where the best driver is unlucky and wins just 3 races but finishes 2nd in all the others. Another driver could have won 4 races but in the others either didnt finish or finish in something like 8th place. The 1st driver winning 3 races (2nd in all the others) would have a much higher number of points but under the new system he would not win??? Also, I think its quite possible that the championship could all be over a few races before the end. Would this mean the last 3-4 races could be pointless?? People would not go to the races, TV audiences would drop, sponsors would not want to sponsor in those last races, etc.
Another new plan is the optional budget cap of £30m. If teams operate within it they will have more technical freedom to develop their cars and engines. Those that choose to spend what they like will be forced to operate within the current more restrictive rules.
The thinking is that teams will spend more money. In the world we live today with the global economic problems this is important to F1. It would be interesting to see if a team running under the £30m budget with a powerful engine and more freedom with aerodynamics could produce a faster car than a team working within constaints. However, this is not going to happen as the Max Mosley (FIA president) says that the FIA “will balance the median performances by adjusting the cost-capped cars should this prove necessary”.
Does this mean the FIA could start messing about with the performance of all the cars just to make things remain competitive!??!?! That would be mad! I dont trust them!! The FIA for Formula is like The FA for football!!
We will have to see what happens!! I am really looking forward to this season and very happy that Jenson Button looks like hes finally got a good fast car. (Very early days though). A big fan of Button – much prefer him to win than Hamilton!!
