Antenna-gate – what a mess by Apple!!

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

So it is was the Apple conference a couple weeks about the iPhone 4 and it problems with the signal reception. Steve Jobs was very defensive about the iPhone 4 and its problems and basically saying other phones have problems if you “hold it wrong”, the media are making a big deal of it and making a mountain out of a mole hill and that Apple are still great and have made great products and just one “problem” and the media jump on their back.

Free cases for everyone …. till end of September

The outcome of the conference was that Apple will be giving away free bumper cases. With the bumper case, people will not be able to touch the bottom left part of the phone which causes the drop in signal. This is a bit of a crude workaround. Its a design flaw with the phone and this was proved by Consumer Reports shortly before the conference. They proved just “holding it wrong” that the signal can drop on the phone. I did’t expect their to be a recall. Recalls are only normally if its something dangerous and the phone isn’t exploding so that was unlikely. Another reason of course is the cost it would have cost Apple. Also, if there was a recall it would have properly taken a few weeks for people to get their phone back. Phones are essentially to people nowadays so being without their phone for a few days would be bad never mind a few weeks.

Software issue

Apple’s earlier excuse that it was a software issue was a loud of rubbish. They claimed that the formula used to calculate the signal strength was wrong and that it could be reported the signal strength 2 bars stronger than it really was. Apparently the formula used was being used in all previous versions of the iPhone – strange how its only noticed now!!

Its not just Apple…..

Jobs also said that ALL phones suffer from a drop in signal strength if you block the antenna and hold it wrong. He then proved it with a few phones. I have not seen how he held it but it is strange how it is only when the iPhone 4 is out that people notice signal strength problems. So many phones have been out in the past and no major issues. RIM, HTC and Nokia have “blasted back” at Apple saying they don’t have issues with their phones and the signal. One of the phones he demoed losing the signal was the HTC Droid and how it lost signal if you blocked/touched antenna. Difference is the antenna is at the top of the phone – not the normal place you hold it when you use the phone! In PC World’s words, “Apple’s iPhone Defense Is Total Nonsense”.

Did Steve Jobs know about the problem??

Soon after the conference it was revealed that a senior engineer told Steve Jobs the iPhone 4 could suffer from antenna and signal problems. Did Jobs just ignore it?? Is that why Apple started doing their own cases – did they know this would happen??

Could this be the start of a “end” for Apple. I don’t mean they will be no more but will this iPhone 4 mess still a slowdown in its comparatively recent growth?? Is Apple losing its touch?? We will see….

Steve Jobs has said that the iPhone 4 is the most successful Apple product in its history and that means its a “success”. It may have sold tons but thats because of the success and satisfaction with previous iPhones and the whole “Apple fanboy/girl” thing” and how they just buy Apple products because its Apple and just because its an iPhone. Here is an example of a video I found amusing showing a “typical Apple iPhone fan” just wanting a iPhone because its an iPhone.

Don’t get me wrong. I am not one of those people who just doesnt buy Apple products because its Apple. I don’t like how you can’t just install software you want on iPhone – it has to be through iTunes. I don’t like how its all so expensive. However, they do make nice products and I have an iPhone 3GS which I love.

When I heard about the iPhone 4 months ago I was looking forward to it, working out when my contract ended etc. Maybe I should even pay the cancellation fee to get it ASAP. However, I will now be waiting to see what happens. Maybe even for the iPhone 5. (Or maybe by then a HTC phone??).

(Apple have a $100m Antenna Design and Testing Lab – maybe they should ask for some money back!)

Apple admit problem with iPhone 4 (but dont explain everything)

Monday, July 5th, 2010

Ever since the new iPhone came out a couple weeks ago, there have been reports of different problems. One problem has been the display apparently showing a yellow spot or dis-colouration. Another is the glass display/cover, is not as strong as some people may think. However, these are only minor compared to the main problem.

The big, huge problem is the problem with the signal/reception. What seems clear is that when you cover/bridge the left metal corner around the black strip, the signal drops drastically and sometimes drops out completely and no calls can be made or calls are dropped. Also, the performance of the wifi apparently drops.

Originally Apple ignored the problem but now have issued a statement:

Some users have reported that iPhone 4 can drop 4 or 5 bars when tightly held in a way which covers the black strip in the lower left corner of the metal band. This is a far bigger drop than normal, and as a result some have accused the iPhone 4 of having a faulty antenna design.”

They then go into La La land and say:

“Upon investigation, we were stunned to find that the formula we use to calculate how many bars of signal strength to display is totally wrong. Our formula, in many instances, mistakenly displays 2 more bars than it should for a given signal strength. For example, we sometimes display 4 bars when we should be displaying as few as 2 bars.”

This does not explain why some people who have had full signal on other phones/previous iPhones, lose the signal completely when using the “death grip” on the phone!??!  Also, they don’t explain why holding the iPhone 4 in that position causes the problem. Apple’s statement doesnt mention Steve Job’s arrogant reply when first hearing about the problem and to “don’t hold it that way” (although properly didn’t expect to).

I am glad I didn’t pay extra to get the iPhone 4 straight away. They need to sort this problem out!! If they don’t I may wait for the “iPhone 5″.

The new iPhone!!

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

So Apple’s WWDC event started yesterday and as usual it started with the keynote speech/presentation. As everyone expected, the main part of it was about the new iPhone. Steve Jobs and co talked abit about other things including the iPad and how great they are and how many they sold etc.

I tried to find a feed/stream to watch the keynote speech but the best I found was an audio feed/commentary and also checked the web sites GDGT and EnGadget which had regular updates along with lots of photos. (I will probably watch the actual keynote later). At one point during the keynote speech, Steve Jobs told everyone to turn off there Wi-Fi connections and there was so many (570!) that it was slowing the presentation down. Check out the report and video on the BBC web site which shows Steve having tech problems.

iPhone 4

The new iPhone will be called iPhone 4. Much of the detail about the phone was already known because of the leaked iPhone several weeks ago. It looks just like the leaked iPhone and had the front facing camera, multi-tasking, better camera and flash etc.

However, there were still a few things we learned:

  • Retina Display – some people were expecting a better screen for the iPhone (OLED) but what we get instead is something called Retina Display. It basically increases the pixel count of previous iPhones by 4 times. Its a lot sharper. Apparently the pixel density is so high that the human eye is unable to distinguish individual pixels! You can read more about Retina Display on the Apple site.
  • FaceTime - another stupid name from Apple. Whos coming up with these names?? Anyway, FaceTime is basically the new name for the video chat feature which is now possible because of the front facing camera. It only works iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 and at the moment only on Wi-Fi. Check more about FaceTime on the Apple site.
  • HD Video recording – you can now record your own movies in HD! If you want to edit it you will use iMovie app with themes, titles and transitions. It will cost $4.99 – probably in the UK will be £4.99!
  • A4 chip – really happy that the new iPhone will be using Apple’s A4 chip. This is the chip made by Apple themselves and is used in the iPad. From what I have read, it was really fast! Also, since its designed by Apple themselves, it is alway power-efficient.
  • Gyroscope - the iPhone 4 will have a built-in three-axis gyroscope. Combined with the accelerometer and Compass, it will makes the iPhone 4 capable of “advanced motion sensing such as user acceleration, angular velocity, and rotation rate”. This means more gestures and much better precision.
  • Noise cancelling mic – there are 2 microphones, 1 on the top which will be used for the noise cancelling.
  • Better camera - it was comfirmed that the camera is a better one. It is a 5 Meg camera and of course there is the LED flash. 5 Meg camera will hopefully be better but still not as good as other cameras. There are some test shots using the new camera in full resolution and apparently they look really good.
  • Stainless steel band – The band going around the phone makes the phone stronger. The phone itself is thiner so makes the battery is bigger (read my previous post about this). It also functions as both iPhone 4 antennas. Will this mean it has been phone reception??

There were 8 new features demoed in the keynote speech but Steve Jobs said that there are 100 new features in total.

Farmville

One of the first things mentioned in the speech was about Farmville?!?! Unfortunately Farmville is coming to the iPhone?!?! :(

New operating system

The new OS for the iPhone will be called iOS 4. We already knew some things about it such as the multi-tasking support and folders. Its about time it had multi-tasking though!! Its interesting that they have changed the name to iOS instead of iPhone OS. It probably means that the OS will be used for the “iPad2″ and maybe other Apple products. Maybe one day on the MacBook??? We will all get to try out the new OS soon – its release on June 21st and will be free!! (I think earlier version of the iPhone e.g. iPhone3 wont support all the new features).

Another stupid name

We had the iPad first which isnt the greatest name ever. Then the new video chat feature called FaceTime – really!??! Steve Jobs then mentions the new iPhone 4 case made by Apple themselves. Its called “bumper” – not as bad as FaceTime though!

Price

The price will range from $199 to $299 in the US depending on memory size. It will be release in 5 countries on June 24th. These countries are US, UK, Japan, France and Germany. In the weeks following this, it will be released in many other countries.

It will be interesting to see how much it will cost in the UK. Properly £199-£299. Apparently O2 will be doing a deal for existing customers which will allow them to upgrade early (6 months early) at a reduced rate. I think I read that it will be 25% reduction in cancellation fee. O2 to release details soon and will probably get details soon from Orange and Vodafone. I am currently with O2 but want to move to Vodafone. Disappointed with the phone reception of with O2. Wonder if Vodafone can do me a deal??

Will I upgrade??

I do plan to upgrade. I love having the latest tech for one thing! The features I am most excited about is the better camera, clear screen (with the Retina display thing) and the bigger battery. Not bothered about the video chat feature. Its funny how a lot of these features in the new iPhone and OS are all “super and brilliant” but have been on other phones for ages!! You can’t just keep saying you took your time to do it right Steve!!

You can read more about the iPhone on the Apple site. If you want you can also watch the keynote speech.

Apple iPhone 4 battery life

Monday, June 7th, 2010

It was the WWDC today and the main announcement was the new iPhone. Well its called the iPhone 4 with lots of new features. I will blog about that later on but one thing I want to mention is the battery life.

The battery life on the iPhone is not really that great. The new iPhone will have a bigger battery. A slide was shown showing how many hours it would last typically on standby, listening to music etc. Some figures the same as the 3GS but overall a bit longer. Lets just hope it really is the case.

Here is the slide showing battery life for the 3GS:

Heres the one for the iPhone 4:

iPhone OS 3.0

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

Apple presented the next major update to the operating system running in the iPhone. Even though I dont have an iPhone (want one though!) this is still pretty big tech news. Although, the iPhone is a fantastic device its certainly not perfect! One of the main things lots of people wants was Copy and Paste. This is now in it! Personally I think the iPhone (and iPod Touch – which I have) could also do with supporting Flash – still not happening :(

Anyway, the new version of the iPhone software (3.0) isnt out yet (out in the summer) but in a presentation they gave details of all the new features etc. It looks pretty good!! You can read more about it on the Apple site including watching the actual presentation (as I type this it is not online yet). Some key features:

  • Search your iPhone
  • Cut, copy, and paste
  • Send photos, contacts, audio files, and location via MMS (only in iPhone 3G)
  • Read and compose email and text messages in landscape

There is a more details summary list of the new features on thenextweb.com.
