United lose :(

Only a few games left in the Premier League and there were more twists and turns this weekend. United played Arsenal and lost 1-0. It now means that if Chelsea beat United this coming weekend, they will be level on points. I was at a wedding during the match so couldn’t watch but was getting score updates. Whenever I go to a wedding this year, United lose!!! Two weeks ago I was at a wedding when United played City in the FA Cup final. On both occasions as well, we apparently played rubbish and didn’t deserve win anyway.

I have since read reports and seen highlights of the match v Arsenal and we were lucky with Vidic and the handball. If ref had spotted it, it would have been a penalty and Vidic probably would have been sent off and then would have missed the game against Chelsea. At the end, Owen was tripped and should have had a penalty but considering the Vidic incident we can’t really complain. United just lost the game in midfield and it was 2 v 3. Rooney was dropping into midfield but it was more of a 4-4-1-1 rather than a 4-5-1. I think Fergie decided to play with 2 forwards since Chicharito and Rooney had played so well recently. However, it just didn’t happen and Arsenal bossed the midfield even without Fabragas. I am happy for Ramsey to score after his horrible injury last year (or the year before??).

It is still in United’s hands and if we win the rest of our games we have won the league. At the moment, the goal difference is exactly the same. It could all be decided on the last day of the season! Its so close!! COME ON UNITED!

Chelsea v Spurs

On Saturday, Spurs lost to Chelsea 2-1. It was a very fortunate win for Chelsea with the ball not crossing the line for one goal (although it was a huge mess up by Gomes – again!) and another which was offside – after a few mishits and deflections!!

That loss for Spurs pretty much ends there chance of getting that vital 4th spot. It unfortunately does mean that City are likely to get 4th! :(

After the United Arsenal result, that win for Chelsea gives them 2 or 3 points than they should have. Those points could be vital at the end with things so tight.

Saying that, Chelsea were favourites to beat Spurs and in my predictions I thought we would lose to Arsenal (and I think it will be a draw v Chelsea) – we have only won 5 times away from home so a game against an Arsenal team with nothing really to lose was always going to be tough.

Champions League semi-finals

Arsenal v United

Well there never seems to be a straight forward Champions League match nowadays!! United played Arsenal on Tuesday and won 3-1 (4-1 on aggregate). It was an excellent performance by United. United played almost a 4-3-3 formation with Ronaldo playing as a striker and Park and Rooney to the right and left. Park played excellently and as also Rooney was amazing.

Arsenal were poor and its not about 5 years since Arsenal won anything. Wenger is going to need to spend some money!

There was abit of luck in the 1st goal and arguably the 2nd goal (freekick) was not a foul but there is no denying the fact that the 1st goal was well taken by Park and Ronaldo’s freekick for the 2nd was amazing – although the keeper maybe should have done better.

The 3rd goal from United was a brilliant super fast attack with about 8 passes from one end of the pitch to the other. It pretty much started from Ronaldo’s back heel to Park, who passed to Rooney, who passed to Ronaldo to finish excellently.

Shortly after the 3rd goal the cameras showed David Beckham in the crowd rubbing his hands in glee and with a huge smile on his face. A United legend!

The only bad thing of the night was the ref card for Fletcher. To be honest, the ref generally performed poorly giving freekicks for everything! The slightest touch seemed to get a foul and sometimes a yellow card. Fletcher’s red card was for a challenge on Fabregas in the penalty box. It was clear to everyone that he got the ball. After getting the ball he of course contacted Fabregas but it was no penalty and pretty much everyone things so.

The rules state that there can be no appeal unless its mistaken identity (which it wasnt). However, the latest news today is that Fletcher could still be able to play in the final.

Chelsea v Barcelona

If there was controversy in the United game, thats nothing compared to the Chelsea v Barcelona game. I am sure this will be in the news for the next few days and it will be interesting to see what happens.

The game finished 1-1 will Barcelona going through on the away goals rule. Chelsea scored early on with a brilliant volley. However, must of the game Barcelona had the vast majority of the possession. Something like 70% to 30%. They certainly played the Barcelona way with lots of passing in pretty shapes but not really getting anywhere. Eto’o was very quiet and Messi was marked by about 3 players so pretty much kept quiet. In fact, Barcelona didnt have 1 shot on target till the 92nd minute.

The main talking point of the game was the ref. He had a really poor poor game. He wasnt completely biased as some decisions went against Barcelona but Chelsea properly should have had at least 2 penalties, maybe even as many as 4! They included a couple hand balls.

Barcelona, had a red card against them with Adibal sent off. It was for a tackle on Anelka but it seemed like a very minor touch and Anelka may have tripped himself up. Also, at least 1 Barcelona defender was in-between the player and the goal. Also, Alves (who was really poor and tried his best to get the ball into the crowd) got a yellow card for a nothing challenge really and that means he misses the final.

The game was almost finished with 4 minutes injury time. Just after the 92nd Alves finally didnt fall over like he had been shot and also finally put in a half decent cross which was poorly cleared by Essien. It ended up at the feet of Messi who passed to Iniesta. He scored a great goal right in the top right of the goal.It left Chelsea shell-shocked but they still had some time and the game eventually finished in the 97th minute.

Near the end of the match, Ballack did his best to show what an idiot he is running after and waving his hands all around the ref after another hand ball by Barcelona. Never knew he could run that fast! Then, Drogba had a go at the ref and had to be pulled back. He had been subbed (he went off “injured” – he spent the whole match doing his usual diving, play-acting and it back-fired when his feigning injury confused his own manager who ended up subbing him) and came out from dressing room in his flip-flops. He also said to the TV cameras that the ref was a f*cking disgrace. Drogba is going to be in trouble with UEFA!

As a United fan I am happy playing Barcelona as we should really beat them with what they have shown in semi finals. Chelsea were a lot more organised and much better tactics. Also, Barcelona will be without their full backs (and one of their main centre defenders).

The negative point about this is that Platini will be happy – he clearly doesnt like English football teams!

Please sell Berbatov!

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

Well maybe that was abit harsh. Its not just the penalty in the shootout that was very (very) poor. Its just that he doesnt seem interested in playing most of the time – I know its his style! Hopefully next season he can step it up. Vidic and Evra didnt play too well in their first season and look at them now!

Back to the games … It was the FA Cup semi-final at the weekend with Arsenal playing Chelsea and United played Everton. Both games were played at Wembley which was different to normal. I didnt watch the Chelsea Arsenal game but Chelsea won. I wanted Arsenal to win – if you know me you will know I am not a fan of Chelsea.

The United v Everton game was on Sunday and Everton won. It was abit of a sport day for me after playing football earlier on, watching the Chinese Grand Prix and then the FA Cup Semi-final. The game was rather boring to be honest and ended 0-0 after extra time. United really should have had a penalty but it was not given. Even Moyes thought it was a penalty. Anyway, we didnt really play particularly well. Stand out performance – as he has been most of this season – was Vidic.

Anyway, it ended up going to penalties. Cahill missed the 1st one and United were in the driving seat. Berbatov was next and as I mentioned earlier, took a really poor penalty – the worst ever?? (see below). So lazy, so weak. It was as if he was kicking the ball back to the keeper!

Everton scored there next one and United’s 2nd was taken by Ferdinand. He also had his penalty saved but it was a better effort. Everyone else scored the penalties including Vidic and Anderson but the 2 missed United penalties meant Everton won. Everton now play Chelsea in the final and I hope they win! For a few different reason that include Everton have a top manager I like and also a few former United players in the squad.

There has been a lot of talk and comments online on various web sites and forums about Berbatov and his shocking penalty. People are also commenting on his lazy, slow style of play. Hes a talented footballer but just not a Manchester United player. United play with pace with players like Ronaldo and Rooney and Berbatov is just not like that. He gets the ball and it all slows down. He must be in the running for worst player of the year (considering his £30m price tag). Scored handful of goals and in some way has (possibly) forced Tevez out of United – who United fans love.

That means the quintuple dream is over and we can now “only” win 4. With Liverpool and Arsenal drawing tonight (in another 4-4 draw and from what I read an amazing game – I saw the last 15 minutes) it means United are level on points with Liverpool with 2 games in hand. Liverpool have 5 more games to play in the league so its moving more and more towards United. Its not over yet though – it could all change very quickly. Come on United!!

Here is that Berbatov penalty:

Chelsea out!! LOL

TevezIts Carling Cup games this week and there have been some interesting results. Last night Arsenal won 3-0 playing with lots of “kids” in the team. The kids of Arsenal really do seem very impressive. United didnt have it quite as easy winning only 1-0 with a Tevez penalty. I havent seen the highlights or even goals (thats on later on tonight) but it sounds like United had lots of chances like he have been recently but just not taking chances.

Tonights games involved the other 2 teams in the “big 4″. Liverpool played Spurs and Harry Redknapp has done it and Spurs won 4-2. At one point Spurs were 3-0 up at half time. Chelsea have been knocked out of the competition also losing on penalties to Burnley. Chelsea took the lead but Burnley equalised and it went to extra time and then penalties. Chelsea were first to miss with Bridge having his penalty saved. Burnley missed when it was 4-3 (it would have been the winning penalty).  Chelsea made it 4-4 on penalties and then Burnley scored the next. It was then up to the ever lovable Mikel who had his penalty missed!!! LOL. Couldnt happen to a nicer person. If you are a regular reader of my blog you will know I am not a big fan of Mikel. Final score in penalties was 5-4 to Burnley.

After watching the highlights I will possibly have more to say…

Midweek game action

RonaldoLast night was pretty much a full Premier League fixture list. One of the big games was the London derby between Arsenal v Spurs. The game ended 4-4!!! The first goal of the game was by Spurs and was a great goal by Bentley. He scored from about 40 yards out. He controlled the ball and volleyed it over Almunia (ala Beckham). Check out the video at the bottom of this post.

At one point, Arsenal were 4-2 with just 2 minutes of extra time to go. However after a mistake by Arsenal who were trying to pass there were out of defence instead of just kicking it clear, Jenas scored and then in injury time Lennon scored after Modric hit the post. I am happy for Harry Redknapp that hes got the draw against Arsenal. He will need to sort out the defence though especially the keeper who looks like a liability.

The other main game (as far as I was concerned!) was the United v West Ham game. United ended up winning 2-0 but it should have been a lot more. The first half they played brilliantly cutting apart West Ham. They could have scored 4 or 5 (or maybe more). Ronaldo got the 2 goals (he actually celebrated the 1st one), the 2nd was after some great play by Berbatov.  Check out the video at the bottom of this post.

In the 2nd half, like in the Everton game, United took the foot of the gas and didnt punish West Ham. It was a chance to get a few more goals and improve goal difference which could be all important at the end of the season. Apparently Fergie wasnt pleased either with United easing off in the 2nd half.
