Premier League title race

United lose :(

Only a few games left in the Premier League and there were more twists and turns this weekend. United played Arsenal and lost 1-0. It now means that if Chelsea beat United this coming weekend, they will be level on points. I was at a wedding during the match so couldn’t watch but was getting score updates. Whenever I go to a wedding this year, United lose!!! Two weeks ago I was at a wedding when United played City in the FA Cup final. On both occasions as well, we apparently played rubbish and didn’t deserve win anyway.

I have since read reports and seen highlights of the match v Arsenal and we were lucky with Vidic and the handball. If ref had spotted it, it would have been a penalty and Vidic probably would have been sent off and then would have missed the game against Chelsea. At the end, Owen was tripped and should have had a penalty but considering the Vidic incident we can’t really complain. United just lost the game in midfield and it was 2 v 3. Rooney was dropping into midfield but it was more of a 4-4-1-1 rather than a 4-5-1. I think Fergie decided to play with 2 forwards since Chicharito and Rooney had played so well recently. However, it just didn’t happen and Arsenal bossed the midfield even without Fabragas. I am happy for Ramsey to score after his horrible injury last year (or the year before??).

It is still in United’s hands and if we win the rest of our games we have won the league. At the moment, the goal difference is exactly the same. It could all be decided on the last day of the season! Its so close!! COME ON UNITED!

Chelsea v Spurs

On Saturday, Spurs lost to Chelsea 2-1. It was a very fortunate win for Chelsea with the ball not crossing the line for one goal (although it was a huge mess up by Gomes – again!) and another which was offside – after a few mishits and deflections!!

That loss for Spurs pretty much ends there chance of getting that vital 4th spot. It unfortunately does mean that City are likely to get 4th! :(

After the United Arsenal result, that win for Chelsea gives them 2 or 3 points than they should have. Those points could be vital at the end with things so tight.

Saying that, Chelsea were favourites to beat Spurs and in my predictions I thought we would lose to Arsenal (and I think it will be a draw v Chelsea) – we have only won 5 times away from home so a game against an Arsenal team with nothing really to lose was always going to be tough.

Next United manager??

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

Manchester United are apparently starting to look at the options for the next United manager. There have been many names mentioned. One paper said that Fergie wants David Moyes. Another says that it will be Jose after next season.

Not sure about if he has another year on contract but I think he will stay until at least the end of next season.

I personally would like either Pep Guardiola, David Moyes or Jose. They all have there pros and cons. Pep Guardiola has done really well at Barcelona but still not that much experience. Also, he is very much part of the Barce family and probably would not want to leave.

David Moyes is a top manager and done good things on a low budget but maybe not a “big” manager and able to attract the “big” players.

Jose of course has won loads, is certainly a “big” manager and proved last night when Inter beat Barce that he knows his stuff. However, he never stays at a club for that long and would he change United’s style of play?? From what he has said in the past, he really seems to like United.

(I think Martin O’Neil would be a fairly good option too).

Whoever succeeds Fergie it will be an almost impossible job replacing the best manager ever.

The Hand of Henry

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

Well everyone seems to be talking about the France vRep. of Ireland game which happened on Wednesday but not about the actual match. It was all about Hnery handled the ball which directly led to France’s goal in extra time.

Here is the Hand of Henry:

There is no denying the Henry handled the ball. In fact he handled it twice. Henry himself has admitted it and said it was “instinctive”. Looking at the replays it looks like the 1st one may have been but the 2nd touch he seems to scoop the ball into the penalty area for Gallas to head to ball into the net. (Looking at replays there was properly an offside too).

Apparently Henry told the ref that he handled it but not clear if it was after the final whistle or the goal. Hand balls happen all the time in football whether deliberate or not but most of the time the ref or linesman spots it, stops play (or disallows goal), maybe gives a card and the game goes on. If the ref/linesman spotted this incident (not idea why the linesman didnt), then there wouldnt be this huge “controversy”.

So far Blatter and Platini (heads of FIFA and UEFA) have not commented on it. No surprise as they are generally hopeless. Who knows what would happen if it was the other way around and e.g. Robbie Keane handled the ball. Maybe this is time to finally have video replays/refs. I dont think it would work having it all the time as football is fast paced and we dont want lots of stopping in the action like other sports. However, having it for goal mouth incidents. To see if the ball went over the line or if there were any fouls etc in the penalty box leading up to a goal.

Its all to late now for Rep. of Ireland and the likely hood of a replay is very very slim. I think real sorry for Ireland. However, one way of looking at it is that they had 3 very good chances to score another goal and maybe should have cleared the ball before it even got to Henry. Also, they were awarded a penalty in the Georgia game in the qualifiers which was for absolutely nothing so maybe everything balances out?? I personally think if they was a replay it would open a huge can of worms. It would set a precident and mean all games in the future with controversal incidents could be replayed or teams would demand replays after games they had lost because of silly things. It would be madness!

It has to be said though that the reputation of Thierry Henry has certainly gone down for many people. He doesnt seem the type of player to “cheat”, maybe it all instinctive. Either way, he will have to do some very good PR to improve his reputation now – he may now be remembered not for a really really good player but for that hand ball.

As I have said there has been many comments from players and managers but one of the most vocal is Roy Keane. Now as a United fan I think Roy Keane is a United legend. However, that is as a player and not as a person/manager. He certainly has seem issues with the FAI (Football Association of Ireland)! He said that they (Rep. of Ireland team) should get over it. I am sure if it was his team he wouldnt let it drop. Although a different type of situation, he certainly didnt forgot about it back in around 2001 when he basically tried to break Haland’s leg with a knee high “challenge”. This was after an incident in around 1998 when Keane tried to tackle Haland and suffered a cruciate ligaments injury.

You can see the Keane press conference where he talks about the Henry incident - http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/8370497.stm

(Reading in news this morning that Eric Cantona said about the Henry incident. “What shocks me the most is that this player, at the end of the game, in front of the TV cameras, went to sit down next to an Ireland player to comfort him – when he had just screwed him,”. “If I had been an Irishman, he wouldn’t have lasted three seconds.”).

Did I see Ji Sung Park today??

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

There was a notice on noticeboard of apartment block I live in. Something about a company doing some filming in the main entrance-way of building today and that it may cause a bit of disturbance with access etc.

I think the company doing the filming were called Just Shoot – not 100% sure. Anyway, at about 545pm I headed out to go to the gym. There were still doing some filming with camera equiment and several people about. As I walked past there were 2 or 3 people sat down and one of them looked like Park. On my way to the gym, thought about it more and I think it may have actually been Park.

When I got back from gym must ppl had gone. However, on my way out to pub later outside near main entrance there were a girls hanging around as well as still several vans/cars/trucks belonging to the camera crew and a large-ish group of people about. Maybe some Ji Sung Park “groupies”?? Possibly doing some filming outside the bar/restaurant near me. They have done filming there before and the bar/restaurant seems to be the place for “celebs” (e.g. Corrie actors, United footballers).

If it wasnt Park, it was someone who looked a lot like him. I literally walked right past him!!

Anyway, thats enough random rambling

Champions League time again

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

Its Champions League week again this week with the last 16 teams fighting it out for a place in the quarter finals. The 2 English teams who played were Liverpool and Chelsea. Chelsea played Juventus in Turin and drew 2-2 on the night. They went through 3-2 on aggregate and from I have seen and read it was a tough match for Chelsea. Essien was back for Chelsea and I think hes a really important player for them and they will play a lot better with him in the team.

Liverpool were also playing tonight, and played Real Madrid. They won 4-0 (5-0 on aggregate). Liverpool played really well but also Real Madrid were rubbish. They just dont seem as good as they used to be with several players getting on abit, too inconsistant or just not good enough!

Torres in particular played very well and as usual Steven Gerrard had a good game in Europe. He also managed to once again get away with a dive!! It resulted in a freekick to Liverpool but nothing came out of it.

Tomorrow it is Uniteds and Arsenals turn. For United, I think its going to be a  tough game but if we play as well as we did a couple weeks ago we should be OK. It seems like Ferdinand will be fit so thats good. It will be interesting to see who Fergie picks to play in midfield with the defence pretty much picking itself and the forwards properly being Rooney and Berbatov. Midfield will be Ronaldo plus 3 others. I think Park will play along with Carrick and I think possibly Giggs for his experience.

Come on United!!
