Bad ref day

Sunday, February 1st, 2009

TorresThere were two games in the Premier League today and in both of them the referees had a poor game. Liverpool played Chelsea at Anfield and won 2-0 with a couple late goals from Torres. Chelsea went down to 10 players after Lampard was sent off. It seems he was sent off for a high challenge but it was fine really and he got the ball. Seemed like he got sent off for being kicked by Alonso!! Gerrard also had a over the ball challenge and wasnt sent off. Possibly should have got a red card – it was properly worse than Lampards challenge. Someone who should have certainly been sent off was Bosingwa who managed to get away with kicking/pushing Benayoun in the back. Amazingly the ref Mike Riley saw nothing wrong with it – the assistant ref was just a couple yards away so I dont know why he didnt say anything!!

Overall Liverpool were the best team and deserved to win. Chelsea are really not playing well. As they said on MOTD2 the Chelsea attack was toothless. They defended well but Cech is not the same keeper he was a couple seasons ago. If Liverpool can keep Torres fit, they have a chance of keeping up with United.

In the other game, Newcastle played Sunderland. The game ended 1-1. It was a “fast and furious” game with end to end action and tackles flying in. Several comical moments! The referee for the game Howard Webb is usually good and is one of the best refs in the Premier League. However he got it wrong with the penalty to Newcastle. Taylor seems to just fall over but ended up getting a penalty. Maybe the ref was influenced after (correctly) not giving a penalty to Newcastle a few minutes before after Duff dived in the box.

In the post-match interviews, as usual the managers didnt agree. Joe Kinnear thought a goal should have been allowed and said Ameobi controlled the ball on his chest well. Replays show he clearly used his arm to control the ball. (He also thought when Duff dived it was a penalty).

Personally I wouldnt be too unhappy if Newcastle were relegated. There is no particularly players I dont like (unlike in the Chelsea team) but I really dont like Joe Kinnear.

A one-horse race??

Van Der SarThe Premier League looked like it was lining up to be one of the most exciting in awhile with all the “big-four” quite level and with Aston Villa threatening to enter the “big four”.

However, its now looking like United are going to make it a one-horse race with United 2 points clear of Liverpool and Chelsea and with a game in hand. If Chelsea and Liverpool draw at the weekend and United win it will extend even further.

United are hitting some form with Liverpool in particular playing poorly. Since Rafa’s rant Liverpool have not won – I think the last 3 goals they have drawn. Chelsea are also not playing very well either. Arsenal are out of the top 4 positions but if they keep Van Persie fit they could be back into the top 4.

Even with all the injuries, at one point about 11 first team players out, United have gone 11 games with conceding a goal. Its a record for Van Der Sar but I think a lot is actually down to the defense in-front of him. On average he has just 3 saves to make a game! Over the last 11 games, Vidic in particular has been brilliant and Evans has done well while Rio has been out injured. Against West Brom, United had some players back from injury so its getting better. Rio was back aswell as Park.

Over the last few weeks many players have been hitting great form. Giggs has rolled back the years and has been amazing. Also Berbatov has now scored 5 goals in 6 games!!

With the United players playing well and scoring, it has meant my fantasy football team has done well. About time after a few weeks of very poor scoring. My team was dropping like a stone in the mini-leagues!! This gameweek I scored 94 points – a lot of help with Ronaldo’s 28 points and Vidic’s 12 points.

Axed because he was English

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

Apparently Jermaine Pennant was sold to Portsmouth because he was English. He has said “I don’t know if it is the English mentality he dislikes but there are not a lot of English players at Liverpool.”

Strange how Liverpool have a English captain in Steven Gerrard though….??? Personally I think its because he was abit crap!!

Ronaldo replacement???

Football in the premierleague has finished for the weekend. Chelsea won, Liverpool and Arsenal won. United lost (to Arsenal 2-1)….. but enough about that!!!

Heres a funny video made by Nike Football featuring Man United kitman showing off some “Ronaldo” skills

There are some other good videos on the Nike Football web site. There is one which is backstage of the filming of that Take It To The Next Level video (featuring Ronaldo with a Manc accent):

The England football team

Capello and RooneyEngland have now played 4 World Cup qualifier games and have 12 points out of 12. So far the performances have generally been very good. Tonight England played Belarus and won 3-1. Belarus played well in the 1st half with some good build up play and some excellent passing. England scored first with a long range shot from Gerrard after good play by Rooney. Belarus got a deserved equaliser with some poor defending. They had a free header to equalise. However in the 2nd half once Rooney scored his first after great play by Heskey it was all England. Rooney got a second after combining well with Gerrard. England should have won 4-1 but Gerrard hit the post when he was through on goal.

Seems like Capello has got England playing well and as a team – and thats a team with both Gerrard AND Lampard in the same team. The team played excellently as a whole. Gerrard out of the two was the best performer. The only problem with Gerrard playing on the left as he was was that he drifted into the middle and it was all very narrow and against a better team if the right sided midfielder really went at England then it could be a problem.

Heskey seems to play really well for England especially with a “little and large” combination. Rooney really has hit some form now scoring in his last 5 games for England and United. Might see if I can fit him into my fantasy football team…..
