Premier League action

RonaldoWeekend premier league football is over. Chelsea continue to play well and are now at the top (level with Liverpool) 8 points clear of United who are in 3rd (with a game in hand). Liverpool beat Bolton 2-1 so kept up with Chelsea. I am still not exactly a fan of Chelsea – mainly because of players like Drogba and Mikel but I am really liking Scolari and his honesty!

United won 5-0, at half time we were 2-0 up but really should have been much more in-front. Ronaldo is now hitting form with 2 goals (freekicks) and one assist. (He has now scored 101 goals for United!) Wish I didnt change my captain in fantasy football team from him to Anelka (although Anelka got a couple goals himself). In his post match interview, he gave praise to Wellbeck who scored on his debut. Looking good for United’s forwards with Wellbeck and also Campbell (whos out on loan at Spurs).

Arsenal lost again – are they out of the premier league race??? They are going to have to go on a brilliant run winning most of their games.

In the other games, the only things worth mentioning were another mess up by Gomes and Owen scoring on his “comeback” – after missing a sitter.

Weekend games

Sunday, November 2nd, 2008

RonaldoThis weekends Premier League games bought with it lots of goals. United beat Hull 4-3 and it was a lot closer in the end than it should have been. United were cruising at 4-1 but defensive mistakes let Hull back in. It was a good chance for United to increase the goal difference but once again the 2nd half performance was not as good as the first. Fergie wasnt happy with the score-line. Chelsea now have a much better goal difference.

At least United are creating lots of chances and Ronaldo is hitting some good form. He missed some games at the start of the season and had a slow(ish) start when he returned to the team but he has not scored more goals in this season, than this time last season!! Also Berbatov looks like he is fitting into the United team really nicely. His first touch and passing is amazing. I feel abit sorry for Tevez who has only played 2-3 games this season and always puts in 100% effort. Hes a big favourite with United fans and I hope he stays.

Chelsea continued their great form by beating Sunderland 5-0. They really are playing some great football and arguably in Frank Lampard have the player of the season so far.

In the other games involving the “big four”, Arsenal lost again -  losing 2-1 to Stoke. Both of Stoke’s goals came from Rory Delap’s amazing long throws. To make it worse for Arsenal, Walcott got injured (with an apparent serious shoulder injury) and Van Persie was stupidly sent off for a mad “challenge” on the keeper. Liverpool also lost. They lost to a late goal against Tottenham. Since Harry Redknapp became Spurs manager he really does seem to have the luck!! Liverpool lost 2-1.

With all these goals, its really helped my fantasy football team. This week was 74 points. Its been a good few weeks with 70, 80 and now 74 points (a 35 and 48 point gameweek in there somewhere).

Midweek game action

RonaldoLast night was pretty much a full Premier League fixture list. One of the big games was the London derby between Arsenal v Spurs. The game ended 4-4!!! The first goal of the game was by Spurs and was a great goal by Bentley. He scored from about 40 yards out. He controlled the ball and volleyed it over Almunia (ala Beckham). Check out the video at the bottom of this post.

At one point, Arsenal were 4-2 with just 2 minutes of extra time to go. However after a mistake by Arsenal who were trying to pass there were out of defence instead of just kicking it clear, Jenas scored and then in injury time Lennon scored after Modric hit the post. I am happy for Harry Redknapp that hes got the draw against Arsenal. He will need to sort out the defence though especially the keeper who looks like a liability.

The other main game (as far as I was concerned!) was the United v West Ham game. United ended up winning 2-0 but it should have been a lot more. The first half they played brilliantly cutting apart West Ham. They could have scored 4 or 5 (or maybe more). Ronaldo got the 2 goals (he actually celebrated the 1st one), the 2nd was after some great play by Berbatov.  Check out the video at the bottom of this post.

In the 2nd half, like in the Everton game, United took the foot of the gas and didnt punish West Ham. It was a chance to get a few more goals and improve goal difference which could be all important at the end of the season. Apparently Fergie wasnt pleased either with United easing off in the 2nd half.

Liverpool – title contenders??

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

AlonsoThe big game of the weekend was Chelsea v Liverpool. The best result would have been a draw (as a United fan). This was even more important after United drew 1-1 against Everton. In the end Liverpool won 1-0 and ended Chelsea’s unbeaten home record of 86 games. I suppose I rather Liverpool win, out of the two since I basically dislike Chelsea more – the main reasons are Terry, Ashley Cole and Mikel. Liverpool played really well and have had their best start of a season for a long long time. The only goal in the game came from a deflected shot from Alonso. Chelsea had a few chances, the best chance was for Ashley Cole – which he funnily sliced wide :)

In the United v Everton game I mentioned above – I have seen the highlights but from what I have read and the little I have seen – United played well in the 1st half but Everton well much better in the 2nd. Rooney was subbed in the 2nd half after getting a bit hot under the collar and Fergie said afterwards it was just incase he got himself sent off.

Its still early on in the season but United are now 8 points behind Liverpool (5 behind Chelsea) with a game in hand. Next game for United is West Ham midweek and then the in-form Hull next weekend.

The other game worth mentioning is the Spurs v Bolton game which was the first game in charge for Harry Redknapp who moved from Portsmouth only a day or so ago. I hope they do well – they have some good players, Spurs play good football and Harry Redknapp is a great manager (and seems to be a top bloke).

Premier League action

RooneyUnited beat West Brom 4-0 and Rooney continued his great form. Goals from Rooney, Ronaldo, Berbatov and Nani. Berbatov was abit quiet in the first half but was more livelyt in 2nd half. Ronaldo seems be getting back to his old self. Seems to be “falling” abit theatrically though – like Ronaldo cira 2004 ish. Rooney had a first goal disallowed and the ref thought he pushed the defender. Harsh decision and it was a great goal!

There was another Liverpool comeback. Went behind after an error by Liverpool but ended up winning 3-2.
Good game with good goals against Wigan – Wigan unlucky to lose. Another good game from Zaki and 2 goals from him.

Chelsea won 5-0 and that was without 7 first team players. Shows the strength in the squad. They arguably should have won by more. Terry was magically fit after being “injured” and not able to play for England on Wednesday. Boro were very poor and Chelsea destroyed them in the 2nd half.

Arsenal game. They went behind but ended up winning 3-1. It was the first game also for Silvestre – the former United player. All changed for Arsenal it seemed when Walcott came on at half time.

Another good week in the fantasy football again with about 71 points.
