Great Manchester Run 2009

Monday, May 18th, 2009

It was the Great Manchester 10km Run at the weekend and I ran it again – 3rd time in a row. I finished in 56 min 49 seconds. I thought I actually would have beat my last years time (53m35s) as I didnt actually stop to walk at all – although at some points I was not running that fast. Not too pleased and disappointed with the time! I have abit of excuse because it was windy on the way back into the city centre!! Even Haile Gebrselassie slowed down and was not able to beat the world record.

Last year I stopped a couple times and the year before (finished in 51m 3s) I even stopped for a loo and stopped to walk at least once. Not idea how I ran that fast!!

Looking at all the stats they provide I am about 20 seconds per km slower than last year!! Going to need to train more!! I plan to continue doing more running from now rather than a few months before the run.

Several friends also ran the race. Almost everyone who ran it last year actually improved their time but I still beat everyone I knew who entered. The way things are going though next year will be over an hour :(

Anyway, thanks for everyone who sponsored me!! I raised £200 (+ gift aid) and thats just the online sponsoring. Its not too late to sponsor me if you want – www.justgiving.com/andrewyee

The weekend was very much a sport weekend for Manchester with the mini Manchester run on Saturday and then later on Sunday afternoon, a special 150m sprint event. The final included the amazing Usain Bolt. I think 150m was not an “official” distance for record books but he ran in 150m in about 14 seconds – the fastest ever. Considering he was not 100% (was in a car accident a few weeks ago) and the conditions were not great it was amazing!!

I was thinking of going to watch it as it was only nearby to me on Deansgate but was aching from the run and it was chucking it down with rain!! By the time, Usain ran in the final it had stopped raining but by then would have been too late for me to watch it live so just watched on TV.

(Also, on Sunday was a special Wimbledon event. Centre court now has a roof so play wont be stopped all day if it rains. It had a special mixed doubles match with Andre Agassi/Steffi Graf v Tim Henmen/Kim Clijster. I saw the end of the match – I thought it was live but while watching the show and the closing of the roof etc it showed the match and was suddenly 8 games in?? There was another game with Tim v Andre and Kim v Steffi – not sure who won as I watched the athletics and highlights of the 10k.

The best tennis match … EVER!!

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

I watched the Wimbledon final at the weekend (much like millions of other people) and witnessed properly the best tennis match ever. One of the best sporting events ever … the thing with tennis is that the game can very quickly change. One minute its one player in the advantage and then after one or two shots it can be the other player.

The game at the weekend with Federer v Nadal was amazing!! It was the longest final for one thing. It had everything. Tension, amazing shots, rain delays, darkness….

The standard of play was brilliant. It was amazing how the players managed such great shots under the pressure. The fourth set tie-breaker will properly be remembered as THE tie-breaker. It had 2 of the best shots of the tournament in 2 successive points.

I wanted Nadal to win, I suppose it would have been nice for Federer to win a record 6 Wimbledons in a row but just bored of him winning everything and Nadal is just more exciting to watch. Federer is still world no. 1 but this should change come the end of the year. The world rankings are determinded on the past 12 months results.

You can still watch the match on the iPlayer (until the weekend). Also you can see highlights etc on the BBC web site.

Wimbledon 2008

I have been watching Wimbledon this year catching the highlights and some of the matches. We are now into the 2nd week of it and already loads of the seeds are out. On the womans side the top 4 seeds are out! The highest seed is Dementieva who is seeded 5. She is winning at the moment but it looked like that in the 2nd set and she lost it!

On the mens side Federer has been winning easily but not really playing really well – just well enough. However I just find him dull and boring and wish someone else would win Wimbledon. Nadal has been playing brilliant and also won Queens so it in good form. He had a bit of a scare yesterday when he was injured but he ended up winning fairly easily.

The best match of the tournament so far was the game last night between Murray and Gasquet. It was possibly the best match I have ever seen. Murray had played well so far this season but against Gasquet he was outplayed for 2 and a half sets. Gasquet was serving for the match but Murray won the 3rd with an amazing shot. He was miles out of the court when he hit it and really got the crowd going. Check out the shot. He eventually won in 5 sets with the light fading rapidly. Its never easy watching a Brit tennis player in Wimbledon!! Tim Henman was in the commentary box and said he now knows what he put us through.

In the womans side it really looks like its going to be one of the Williams sisters. Personally I hope the chinese girl Zheng who beat no. 1 seed Ivanovic wins rather than the Williams sisters.
